Name: Diederik van Aemstel
(Even though I like the sound of 'Van der Linde' better, I had to change it once I found this. Oh well, he is a new character, so--)
Place Being Personified: Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Appearance: (see picture)
Having gone through a major growthspurt (his early adulthood=Amsterdam's golden age; the city population had reached max capacity), Diederik's height has reached a staggering 6'5"...and he's still not done. As such, he suffers often from growing pains. His teeth are quite crooked, but have yet to become stained by tobacco. His face bears fresh scars from old acne breakouts (symbolic of the plague in Amsterdam at this time).
(Note: Not shown in the picture, but he does wear slacks. ...Which is pretty much the only 'uniform' tradition for older Dutch boys, throughout history. In the winter, he wears a 'pijjekker' (pea coat), and occasionally a visor cap.)
Notable Personality Traits:
As he was infamous in his former, more rebellious years for badly beating some Spaniard up (and not just on one day, but over a period of time) and being a rather stand-offish person in general, his reputation tends to precede him. The expression and aversion to polite conversation doesn't help.
Nevertheless, he tends to be something of a champion for the underdogs (whether he wants to be or not--you save ONE freshman from bullies...). Especially religious minorities (which came from all over to seek refuge in Amsterdam).
He will usually try to get something out of it (those who could not contribute to the city were encouraged to move on), but...there is a certain level of pitifulness that he just can't say 'no' to.
He just recently started smoking (tobacco smoke was seen as a preventative measure against plague, by the Dutch), but is already so heavily addicted (Dutch golden age merchants always had their pipes) that he has to take frequent smoke breaks to avoid getting nervous and irritated.
God help you if you call him 'Ditya'.
