1: What is your OC’s human name and which country/city/state does it represent?
Sofija Galante; Riga, Latvia
2: What is that character’s personality and how does it correspond to the country you wish to roleplay?
After being constantly taken over by different countries, she’s very wary of strangers and tries to stay out of others’ affairs, fearing another invasion. Sofija is very kind and caring towards the ones she knows and trusts, however. She can sometimes lose her temper, which only leads to a huff and her storming off, but this rarely happens and one would have to do something very upsetting for her to act this way. She’s learned to be polite and obedient, being under someone else’s control for most of her life. She is easy to get along with, once you finally convince her your not out to hurt her, and will often try to change herself to try to please others.
3: What are their relationships with other countries?
She has a rather… poor relationship with Russia and her relationship with Germany is complicated. Her best relationships are with the other Baltics, who she can easily relate with. Any others, she is wary of.
4a: How much do you know about the history of your character? Give us a little backstory on him/her.
Though an ancient Finnic settlement did exist on the site now known as Riga, its modern history begins in 1158 with the arrival of German traders (who established an outpost in Riga for trading with the Baltics), mercenaries, and missionaries. In 1201, the newly-proclaimed Bishop of Livonia, Albert, landed in Riga with 23 ships and over 1500 armed crusaders, and proceeded to, erm, crusade. That same year, Riga officially became a city, and its royalty and citizens were converted to Christianity, often against their will.
As a result Riga came under the power/guidance of the Holy Roman Empire. After the Reformation in the 16th century, Riga converted to Protestantism and continued to function as a gateway to trade with the Baltics and Russia. Between 1561 and 1581 Riga gained the status of a Free Imperial City, but didn’t last long as soon it came under the influence of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
Riga was defended during the Thirty Years’ War by the King of Sweden, who gained rule over the city in 1621 for political and economic gain (but also in favor of German Lutheran Protestantism). The Russo-Swedish War (1656-1658) practically brought the Russians to Riga, but managed to keep them out until 1710. In this year, Peter the Great invaded the city and annexed it into the Russian Empire, where it remained a port city until WWI.
WWI brought the Russian Revolution and the German Army to Riga. In 1918, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed, giving the Baltics back to Germany, but it was later renounced by Germany and Russia giving Riga, and the other Baltics, independence. Latvia, with Riga as its capital, officially declared its independence on November 18, 1918.
In 1940, Stalin occupied and annexed Latvia, but was quickly taken by Hitler between 1941 and 1944, until the Red Army seized it back. The end of WWII brought the end of the “tug-of-war” between Germany and Russia over Latvia. With the Jewish population of Riga devastated and hundreds of thousands of Latvians dead and thousands in exile in countries all over the world, it lost one-third of its population, and its independence. It officially became a Soviet Republic. In 1986 Perestroika initiated the dissolution of the Soviet Union leading to Latvia declaring its full independence on August 21, 1991 and joining the UN as an independent country.
